There are several campgrounds near our meeting site in Bellaire. Unfortunately, some will not be open in early May because freezing temperatures can still occur at that time. In addition, for those campgrounds that will be open in early May, it is possible that some services (e.g. water at campsites and in bath houses) could be limited depending or local temperatures in spring 2019. Here are some of the campgrounds that plan to be open during the first week of May in 2019. They are listed by distance from the conference site at Shanty Creek Resort in Bellaire.


Craven Park Campground | Bellaire, MI

About 3 miles north of Shanty Creek Resort (1 mile east of downtown Bellaire). About 30 RV sites (20 full hookup, 10 electric and water only, 30 amp) and 20 tent sites. This park is managed by the Village of Bellaire. Currently reservations cannot be made online; it is first come, first serve. 2018 rates were $15 to $30 per day. There is no on-site camp host. The park is on Craven Pond and adjoins the Cedar River Natural Area, which has some trails. This park usually opens the last Saturday in April (for the start of the fishing season). You may wish to call the Bellaire Village Office in April 2019 to confirm the tentative opening day in 2019 and if they expect water to be turned on.

Chain O’Lakes Campground | Bellaire, MI

About 5 miles south of Shanty Creek Resort. This is a private campground for RVs and tents, and also has a few cabins for rent. RV sites have water, sewer, and electric hook-ups (30 and 50 amp). In 2018, daily rates were $28 for tent sites and $35 to $41 per day for RV sites. Tent sites have electric. This campground is open most of the year, but it is not on a lake. You can make online reservations.

Thurston Park | Central Lake, MI

About 12 miles north of Shanty Creek Resort. Located in downtown Central Lake on Intermediate Lake, Thurston Park is managed by the Village of Central Lake. There are about 38 sites in this relatively small village park (four acres). All sites have electric (20-30 amp). Twelve of the RV sites also have water (sites 29-40). Rates in 2018 were $20 to $25 per night with a $6 online reservation fee. The park opens the last Saturday of April for the start of fishing season. Thurston Park has a dump station, restrooms, showers, playground, public dock, and wifi. There is a campground host on site. Use link below to make online reservations.

City of East Jordan Tourist Park | East Jordan, MI

About 18 miles north of Shanty Creek Resort. The park is managed by the City of East Jordan. It opens in mid-April and is located on Lake Charlevoix, Michigan’s third largest inland lake. The park has 90 campsites, 75 of which have full hookups with water, electricity and sewer connections. There are also 12 tent campsites (with no hook-ups) and three cabins. Daily rates in 2018 were $18 for tent sites to $36 for full hook-up sites (electric, water, sewer). Cabins were $75 per night. The park offers a dump station, shower house, 30 and 50 amp service, free wifi, boat slips, beach, camp store, etc. There is a campground host on site. You can make reservations online (six months in advance) via the Tourist Park website.

*Barnes Park | Eastport, MI

About 18 miles north of Shanty Creek Resort. This park is managed by Antrim County and is located on Lake Michigan. *The park usually opens in mid-May, but they may open early for us if there is an early spring in 2019. No guarantees. They do not take online reservations. It is first come, first serve, but if they do open in early May there will be plenty of space. The park is 129 acres in size, and has 76 improved sites for RV and tents with electric. The park has showers, restrooms, playground, beach and trails, but no wifi. Park employees are often at the park headquarters starting in early April, and it may be possible to reach them by phone at that time to see if they plan to open early. Or you could contact Robert Haack at haack@msu.edu, who lives near Barnes Park and will monitor its progress. In 2018, the daily rates were $30 for electric sites and $26 for rustic (no electric) sites.

Honcho Rest Campground | Elk Rapids, MI

About 25 miles west of Shanty Creek Resort. Honcho Rest is a private RV campground (no tent camping) with six cabins also for rent (no dogs in cabins). They have 97 full hookup sites, and seven RV sites with only water and electric (sites 103-110). They are located on Bass Lake just a mile outside of the Village of Elk Rapids. The park opens on May 1 and offers showers, restrooms, laundry, wifi, playground, etc. In 2018, rates in early May were $40 per day for RV sites and $69 for cabins. Rustic Campgrounds

There are also two small Michigan DNR rustic campgrounds nearby. These have vault toilets, a hand pump for water, but no electric. Each campsite has a picnic table and a fire circle. Sites are available on a first come, first served basis. These sites do not take reservations; they have a self-registration kiosk when you enter the campground with instructions on how to register. Note: A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for all vehicles and RVs that enter State Parks and State Campsites. Currently, a Passport costs $11 per year for residents and $32 for non-residents.

  • Graves Crossing State Forest Campground
    About 13 miles east of Shanty Creek Resort. This campground includes 10 rustic sites in the Jordan Valley, located on the Jordan River. You can drive into this campground from nearby Hwy M-66.
  • Pinney Bridge State Forest Campground
    About 14 miles east of Shanty Creek Resort. This campground includes 15 rustic sites in the Jordan Valley. These are walk-in sites from a nearby parking lot at the end of a two-mile-long gravel road, which may be in poor condition in early May.
